CONGRATULATIONS TO JACK SHENG!
As of today, the green shooting star above will only look familiar to a few individuals around the world… it represents a Feedback score of 500,000. The “Sweating Star” (as I like to call it) on the right is familiar to only one person, Jack Sheng, as it represents a Feedback score of 1,000,000 (something he has achieved not once, not twice, but four times!). I guess the “sweat” represents how hard it is to accomplish such an amazing feat. The stars will be unveiled at the San Jose campuses today when the company welcomes Jack to our offices to celebrate in his remarkable achievement.
The following was posted on the eBay internal blog and it tells a pretty incredible story of hard work, entrepreneurship and perseverance…
IT ALL STARTED ABOUT EIGHT YEARS AGO IN A GARAGE IN ARCADIA, CALIF., WHERE JACK SHENG AND HIS TWO BEST FRIENDS, ALVIN AND EUGENE, DECIDED TO TEST THE E-COMMERCE WATERS BY SELLING ELECTRONICS ACCESSORIES ON EBAY.THE THREE 25 YEAR OLDS, WHO HAD KNOWN EACH OTHER SINCE THEY WERE 12, ALL HAD FULL-TIME JOBS. THEY THOUGHT THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO BRING IN SOME EXTRA MONEY BY RESELLING GOODS ON EBAY, SO THEY GAVE IT A SHOT.THEY STARTED WITH A $500 INVESTMENT IN CELL PHONE AND ELECTRONICS ACCESSORIES, WHICH THEY BEGAN SELLING RIGHT AWAY. BEFORE THEY KNEW IT, THEY WERE SELLING 200-300 ITEMS PER DAY AND HAD HIRED A FEW FRIENDS FROM THEIR CHURCH TO HELP PACKAGE AND SHIP THE ITEMS. EFORCITY, AS THE COMPANY WAS CALLED, FOCUSED ON SELLING SMALL, LOWER-PRICED ITEMS LIKE CELL PHONE, CAMERA AND ELECTRONICS ACCESSORIES, WHICH KEPT COSTS AND THE NEED FOR SPACE TO A MINIMUM. STILL, IN LESS THAN A YEAR THEY HAD TO RENT AN OFFICE TO KEEP UP WITH DEMAND.IN 2002, THE TRIO ATTENDED EBAY’S E-COMMERCE FORUM, WHERE THEY MET FORMER EBAY CEO MEG WHITMAN, EBAY FOUNDER PIERRE OMIDYAR AND SEVERAL OF EBAY’S TOP SELLERS. THEY NETWORKED, SHARED KEY LEARNINGS AND ASKED QUESTIONS OF THE OTHER SELLERS. THEY QUICKLY RECOGNIZED THAT THEY ALREADY HAD MORE FEEDBACK STARS THAN ANY OF THE OTHER SELLERS (50,000 AND COUNTING!). MORE IMPORTANTLY, HOWEVER, THEY REALIZED THAT THE OPPORTUNITY TO GROW EFORCITY WAS ALMOST LIMITLESS, AS LONG AS THEY COULD CONTINUE TO FIND WAYS TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL VALUE FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS.
EFORCITY: THE 90TH FASTEST-GROWING COMPANY IN THE U.S.
IT WAS AROUND THIS TIME THAT JACK, ALVIN AND EUGENE DECIDED TO LEAVE THEIR FULL-TIME JOBS AND DEDICATE THEMSELVES COMPLETELY TO EFORCITY. THEY DRAFTED A BUSINESS PLAN, MOVED INTO A BIGGER OFFICE AND BEGAN LOOKING FOR WAYS TO ADD VALUE TO THEIR PRODUCTS. JACK STARTING KNOCKING ON THE DOORS OF MANUFACTURERS IN CHINA, IN HOPES OF SETTING UP DIRECT RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE MAKERS OF THE PRODUCTS THEY SOLD. WHILE IT WAS TOUGH AT FIRST (THE MANUFACTURERS ONLY WANTED TO DEAL WITH WELL-KNOWN DISTRIBUTION COMPANIES), JACK WAS ABLE TO SHOW THEM THAT HE HAD A THRIVING EBAY BUSINESS AND HE WAS WORTH DOING BUSINESS WITH.TODAY, JACK AND HIS PARTNERS HAVE ESTABLISHED DIRECT RELATIONSHIPS WITH MORE THAN 100 MANUFACTURERS IN CHINA, AND IN MANY CASES THEY HELP INFLUENCE THE DESIGN OF THE PRODUCTS THEY SELL BASED ON CUSTOMER FEEDBACK RECEIVED THROUGH EBAY. EFORCITY NOW OFFERS A WIDE SELECTION OF CELL PHONE, MP3, PRINTER, DIGITAL CAMERA, PDA, HDTV (HDMI CABLE), AND BLUETOOTH ACCESSORIES.IN 2006, INC. MAGAZINE NAMED EFORCITY CORP. THE 90TH FASTEST-GROWING COMPANY IN THE UNITED STATES ON THE FAMOUS “INC. 500” LIST. TODAY, EFORCITY IS ONE OF THE LARGEST EBAY RETAILERS FOR HIGH TECH GADGETS, GROSSING MORE THAN $40 MILLION IN ANNUAL REVENUE. THE COMPANY HAS ALMOST 200 EMPLOYEES WORKING AROUND THE CLOCK AND AROUND THE WORLD, SHIPPING 25,000 – 30,000 ORDERS PER DAY.“IN JUST EIGHT SHORT YEARS WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GROW OUR BUSINESS FROM A MERE IDEA INTO A REALITY THAT FAR EXCEEDS OUR ORIGINAL EXPECTATIONS OF SUCCESS,” SAID JACK.
LISTENING TO YOUR CUSTOMER
HE CREDITS MUCH OF THIS SUCCESS TO THE DEDICATION HE AND HIS PARTNERS HAVE TO PROVIDING A GOOD CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE. BEING ABLE TO COLLECT FEEDBACK AND ACT ON IT IN REAL TIME, HE EXPLAINS, HAS ALLOWED EFORCITY TO EVOLVE ACCORDING TO CUSTOMER NEEDS AND STAY ONE STEP AHEAD OF THE COMPETITION.“EVERY SMALL-BUSINESS OWNER SHOULD DEVELOP A SYSTEM FOR COLLECTING FEEDBACK FROM THEIR CLIENTS,” HE ADDS. “IT CAN MEAN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A $3 MILLION BUSINESS AND A $30 MILLION BUSINESS.”HE ALSO ATTRIBUTES HIS SUCCESS TO A GREAT PARTNERSHIP WITH EBAY. “WE’VE LEARNED SO MUCH BY WORKING CLOSELY WITH THE INTERNAL TEAMS AT EBAY. EBAY EMPLOYEES SHOULD BE PROUD OF THE POSITIVE IMPACT THEY HAVE ON PEOPLE’S LIVES.”WHEN ASKED HOW HE WOULD ADVISE OTHER EBAY SELLERS AND ENTREPRENEURS LOOKING FOR SUCCESS, JACK ENCOURAGED BUSINESS OWNERS TO GET OBJECTIVE FEEDBACK ON THEIR IDEAS FROM OTHERS.“ONE OF THE TOUGHEST PARTS OF BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR IS THAT THERE’S NO ONE TO BOUNCE IDEAS OFF OF AND GIVE YOU FEEDBACK. HAVING THREE PARTNERS HAS BEEN CRITICAL TO OUR SUCCESS – THERE’S NEVER AN EVEN SPLIT ON DECISIONS SO IT’S EASY FOR US TO DECIDE ON THE PATH TO TAKE. IF YOU DON’T HAVE A PARTNER, SEEK OUTSIDE COUNSEL. TRY TO SELF-EVALUATE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE AND ASK OTHERS TO GIVE YOU FEEDBACK ON YOUR PLANS AND TOUGH DECISIONS. IT WILL GREATLY IMPROVE YOUR SUCCESS.”JACK IS LOOKING FORWARD TO CONTINUED GROWTH OF THE BUSINESS. HE NOTES THAT WHILE MANY BUSINESSES SEE SLOWED GROWTH DURING AN ECONOMIC SLOWDOWN, IN HIS EXPERIENCE, EBAY SELLERS ALWAYS FARE BETTER. PEOPLE COME TO EBAY FOR DEALS, HE NOTES, MAKING IT A GREAT PLACE TO SHOP WHEN BUDGETS ARE TIGHT.
I realize Jack’s schedule will be pretty tight when he pays a visit to our campus later today but it would be great to get the opportunity to shake his hand and congratulate him on a truly amazing achievement.
Cheers,
RBH

Nearing 1 million Feedback with three accounts
High-tech retailer and eBay giant Jack Sheng is closing in on another milestone—eforcity is about to become his third eBay account with a Feedback score of over 1 million. His other accounts with more than a million are everydaysource and accstation.
Eight years ago, Sheng and his partners Eugene Wong and Alvin Wong started their eBay business out of Sheng's garage. He and his partners now have 180 employees and offices in El Monte (California), China and Hong Kong, and are generating $30 million a year in revenue.
Sheng feels his 98.8% Feedback rating is one factor in his growth and success. "Although buyers may not know me, they understand from my Feedback rating that I am dependable.
An even bigger factor is undoubtedly Sheng's commitment to exceptional customer service, a commitment paying off in increasingly high detailed seller ratings (DSRs). In the past month he's maintained a solid 4.8 for Shipping Costs-a full 2 point increase over his 12-month average.
To achieve this, Sheng tested a variety of pricing structures and established one that works for his bottom line and DSRs. He found that offering free shipping not only boosted his DSRs but resulted in a spike in sales. "It's all about trying different methods and finding what works for you."
What's Sheng's next goal? Not surprisingly, he wants to reach 2 million Feedback faster than he accomplished 1

Choosing a Marketplace – Where to Sell Online
Choosing a Marketplace – Where to Sell Online
When exploring which online marketplaces you might like to try, there are some essential criteria to look at. They are:
- Cost
- Traffic and Popularity Ranking
- Permitting links back to your website
- Public seller profile
Marketplacester shows you the Alexa ranking and the Google PageRank of each marketplace. This is the ranking from the Alexa service, which ranks the popularity of websites on the internet against each other. For example, an Alexa rank of 1 means it is the most popular trafficked site on the internet. The major marketplaces will be in the top 1000 Alexa rankings, while websites with medium levels of traffic will be much higher. This field can be used to measure the relative traffic and popularity of any particular marketplace as compared to any other. The lower the Alexa rank is, the better visibility and traffic the website has.
The Google PageRank is the ranking that Google gives to the specific marketplace domain name, and is a beneficial feature to know when evaluating a marketplace. It will range from 0-10, and the higher number indicates a higher value site with higher traffic volumes. If you are looking for more popular marketplaces with higher traffic volumes, or if you are trying to build your own Search Engine Optimization through your marketplace listings, look for those with a higher PageRank value.
Another factor to evaluate is whether or not a marketplace allows you to link back to your website from your product listings. This provides an advantage to you as a seller by directing buyers to your primary website to purchase from you directly. It also aids in your Search Engine Optimization and search rankings by providing a valuable link from a related site, further increasing your visibility in search engines through link building. Many of the larger sites, and any that have selling commissions do not allow this however, as it takes away from money they would otherwise be earning.
Many marketplaces will give you a public merchant profile page when you create your account as a seller. This can add value to you as a merchant in several ways, providing an additional web presence for your store and business as a reputable seller online. In addition, it can potentially give you a SEO advantage by providing content about your business name and other keywords on another external website. This field in the directory tells you quickly whether or not the particular marketplace provides you with a publicly available merchant profile that you can use and reference.
You will probably not find any sites that meet all of these criteria, but knowing the important factors to look for will help you determine which ones might be worthwhile for you and your business. Since long term commitments are not required, there is no harm in experimenting until you find the right fit for you.
Review all online marketplaces for free and easily see all of the above factors for every online marketplace with Marketplacester’s free directory of online marketplaces.
How to Find the Most Profitable Marketplace to Sell Your Items
Online retailers are experiencing a huge shift in
moving from giant marketplaces like eBay and Amazon to smaller, more boutique
and community-orientated marketplaces such as ArtFire, RubyLane, Addoway and Bonanza.
I’ve seen a lot of these spring up in the past few years, but only in the last two years or so, have I really started being impressed by some of the options these emerging marketplaces offer. Now is definitely a great time to check them out because a lot of sellers – including SaleHoo members - are really hitting the right market and making an impressive amount of sales when they start selling on these sites.
So where can you find new marketplaces to try out, and how do you know if they are any good?
The Exciting New Tool Allowing You to Find the Best Marketplace
This month, eCommerceBytes launched a new feature called Ratings and
Reviews for online sellers. The Ratings and Review feature provides a
platform for you to get unbiased reviews on marketplaces before you spend time
(and/or money) listing your items there.
The new rating system allows users to rate marketplaces and auction sites on performance, reliability ease of use, customer service and value. Reviewers can also leave written comments to tell you all about their experience using the marketplace.
eCommerceBytes’ Ratings and Reviews also allows you
to review and view ratings for inventory management systems, payment services, storefronts and carts, shipping services, email list hosting, and consignment services.
Pretty cool, huh?
Now you can get a snapshot of what other users are saying about these service providers before you sign up to use them yourself!
The new ratings system is starting to gain traction
and is getting more reviews every day so I recommend that you check it our yourself
and review what others have to say, and rate your own experiences to share with
others.
Want to know my pick for the very best marketplaces
on the web? I recently went undercover and posed as a brand new seller: I
created new accounts on 5 of the top marketplaces and tested them for
profitability, customer services, fees and more. To find out which marketplace
came out on top, you need to become a member of my new product, Online
Selling Tactics by SaleHoo. Check it out here.
